Marcusson, Göran

Göran Marcusson worked as bricklayer and tram driver before, aged 24, he devoted himself to music. He received international acclaim for the first time in 1987, winning the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition. Soon after, he won an award at Crussellweek in Finland and, in 1991, a prize at the Bodensee Music Competition. In 1992 – the same year that he received his Soloist Diploma from the University of Gothenberg – he received a prize at the Vienna Music Competition and was awarded a handmade flute made of Waterford Crystal for his outstanding performance in James Galway’s masterclass.

Mr. Marcusson’s CDs have received rave reviews and include The Swedish Romantic Flute with the strings of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, The Nordic Flute with the Camerata Roman and American Sonatas. His latest recording, Inspiration by Bach, was released November 2006 on the Naxos label featuring the B minor suite, Brandenburg Concerto No 4, the Solo Partita and many beautiful arrangements. The ensemble on this recording is the relatively recently formed Camrata Calluna.

Mr. Marcusson has played principal flute with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Cadaques and the London Symphony Orchestra. Today he holds a position in the Göteborgs Musiken Chamber Ensemble and manages to keep a busy international schedule, giving solo appearances and masterclasses in the USA, South America, Taiwan and throughout Europe. For eight consecutive years he has been among the family of artists at the Newport Music Festival R.I. In September 2006 he performed the newly written Mike Mower Flute Concerto in the National Orchestra Hall, Taipei, Taiwan; and later the same piece in Göteborg, Sweden. In October and November 2007 his American tour started in Mexico City at the Mostly Mozart Festival, playing performances of the C Major Flute & Harp Concerto, and ended in North Carolina.
